Moxibustion for Knee Osteoarthritis: What RCTs Can and Cannot Show

Randomized trials can compare a moxibustion intervention with a control, but they do not turn every heat method into a proven treatment for knee pain. The useful question is what was tested, what changed, and what remains uncertain.

What outcome can an RCT actually answer?

A trial may estimate differences in pain, function, stiffness, or quality-of-life scores over a defined period. It cannot establish that the same result will occur with another stick, point selection, session schedule, practitioner, or home setup.

What should a reader inspect in the evidence?

Check the participants, comparator, intervention details, follow-up period, outcome scale, adverse-event reporting, and risk of bias. A statistically significant result is not the same as a clinically important improvement, and a short follow-up does not establish long-term joint benefit.

What does this page not prove?

It does not prove that moxibustion repairs cartilage, replaces exercise or medical care, prevents surgery, or is suitable for every knee problem. Knee pain can reflect osteoarthritis, injury, infection, inflammatory disease, or another condition requiring assessment.

What safety questions come first?

Heat exposure can cause burns, delayed skin injury, smoke irritation, or other adverse events. Review the moxibustion safety framework before considering the intervention. Stop for increasing pain, blistering, persistent redness, breathing symptoms, dizziness, or a worsening reaction.

How should this evidence be used?

Use it to prepare a focused discussion with a clinician or qualified practitioner: what is the diagnosis, which intervention was studied, what benefit is realistic, and how will risk be monitored? The broader pain evidence page covers why pain conditions should not be treated as one interchangeable group.
