ST40 (Fenglong) – Moxibustion Acupoint Reference

Chinese Name: Fenglong (丰隆)

Meridian: Stomach (Yangming)

Location: Midway between ST36 and the lateral malleolus, 2 cun lateral to the tibia

Location

ST40 is located on the lateral lower leg, midway between ST36 (Zusanli) and the tip of the lateral malleolus, approximately 2 cun lateral to the tibial crest.

Clinical Indications for Moxibustion

  • Phlegm and dampness: Copious sputum, sinus congestion, chest tightness
  • Dizziness and vertigo: Particularly with sensation of heaviness
  • Digestive disorders: Abdominal distension, nausea with phlegm
  • Mental fog: Cognitive sluggishness, heavy-headed sensation

Evidence Summary

A 2018 RCT found ST40 moxibustion significantly reduced sputum volume and improved cough symptoms in patients with chronic bronchitis (73% effective vs 45% control). The point is traditionally considered the ‘influential point for phlegm’ in TCM.
