BL23 (Shenshu) – Moxibustion Acupoint Reference

Chinese Name: Shenshu (肾俞)

Meridian: Urinary Bladder (Taiyang)

Location: 1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the L2 spinous process

Moxa Duration: 10-15 min | Distance: 2-3 cm

Location

BL23 is located on the lower back, 1.5 cun (about 2 finger-widths) lateral to the lower border of the L2 spinous process, at waist level.

Clinical Indications for Moxibustion

  • Lower back pain: Chronic LBP especially kidney-related in TCM theory
  • Urinary disorders: Frequent urination, nocturia, incontinence
  • Fatigue and adrenal support: Burnout, chronic fatigue
  • Sexual health: Low libido, erectile dysfunction (traditional use)

Evidence Summary

A 2018 systematic review of 6 RCTs found BL23 moxibustion combined with acupuncture improved chronic low back pain outcomes (VAS reduction 2.1 points greater than controls). For urinary frequency, a small RCT showed 65% improvement after 4 weeks of daily BL23 moxibustion.
