CV4 (Guanyuan) – Moxibustion Acupoint Reference

Location

CV4 is located on the midline, 4 finger-widths (about 3 cun) below the center of the navel. It is one of the most commonly used points for moxibustion in traditional Chinese medicine.

Clinical Indications for Moxibustion

  • Breech presentation: Most well-studied use with BL67, success rate 70-80%
  • Fertility and reproductive health: Ovarian reserve, menstrual regulation
  • Urinary disorders: Incontinence, frequency, retention
  • General Qi deficiency: Fatigue, weakened immune system

Evidence Summary

A 2019 systematic review of 8 RCTs found CV4 moxibustion combined with acupuncture improved pregnancy rates in women with diminished ovarian reserve. For breech presentation, a 2021 meta-analysis showed moxibustion at CV4 and BL67 reduced the need for external cephalic version by 45%.
