Moxibustion and Fertility: Evidence, Limits, and Questions for Care

Fertility is a high-stakes medical topic. A traditional fertility claim, a menstrual change, or a laboratory measure cannot by itself show that moxibustion improves the chance of pregnancy or changes ovarian reserve.

What question is the evidence actually asking?

Studies may examine menstrual symptoms, hormone measures, ovarian-reserve markers, assisted-reproduction outcomes, or pregnancy outcomes. These are not interchangeable endpoints. A change in a surrogate measure does not automatically translate into a higher chance of a healthy pregnancy.

What should a reader look for in a study?

Check whether participants had an identified fertility diagnosis, whether the intervention was moxibustion alone or part of a larger protocol, what the comparator received, how outcomes were measured, and whether adverse events and dropouts were reported. Small or heterogeneous studies may be useful for further research without proving a reliable treatment effect.

What does this page not promise?

It does not claim that moxibustion restores ovarian reserve, treats infertility, replaces fertility evaluation, or improves outcomes for every person. It also does not support copying a point or duration protocol from a study into home use.

What safety questions matter?

Review pregnancy status, bleeding, medications, skin and sensation, smoke exposure, and the actual heat method before considering any session. Use the moxibustion safety guide and involve the clinician managing fertility care. A person should not delay evaluation of irregular bleeding, severe pain, or other symptoms while trying a complementary approach.

How should fertility claims be discussed?

The most responsible conclusion is conditional: moxibustion may be discussed as a complementary practice, but evidence quality, diagnosis, treatment goals, and safety context must be reviewed together. The period-pain evidence page should not be used as fertility evidence, even when symptoms overlap.
